Noel Schmidlin (*1992)

composer | performer | sound artist | based in Berne, Switzerland

Noel’s works often deal with our culturally shaped perception of music and the value systems we construct to appraise it. His compositions seek to reveal what the listener identifies as being (not) music. Noel composes for traditional instruments as well as for objects, motors, movements and with sound recordings.

In addition to composing, he plays the violin in several ensembles, which specialise in free improvisation, jazz, folk or contemporary classical music respectively. Noel works for the TABULA MUSICA ORCHESTRA and contributes to educational projects in the field of experimental music. For example with Tönstör.

He studied composition with Wanja Aloe and Christian Henking and music pedagogy at the University of Arts Berne (HKB). He also studied with Simon Steen-Andersen, Juliana Hodkinson and Niels Rønsholdt at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, Denmark. In addition, he obtained the teaching diploma in music at the Berne University of Teacher Education.

Noel has collaborated with several artists and ensembles, such as Giuseppe Mennuti, Bieler Sinfonieorchester, Ensemble Proton Bern, collective lovemusic, Ensemble Vertigo (HKB), dèdalo ensemble, Ensemble Tramontana, Guy Krneta, Georgios Balatsinos or Lara Wedekind amongst others.
